This is the Explanatory Note for the Law Enforcement (Powers and Responsibilities) Amendment Bill 2014. It recommends amendments to Part 9 (Investigations and questioning) and Part 15 (Safeguards relating to police powers) of the *Law Enforcement (Powers and Responsibilities) Act 2002* (NSW).

The law gives police the power to stop and search people and says how those searches must occur. In some circumstances this can include strip searches or searches under Firearm Prohibition Orders. Aboriginal and young people are disproportionately subject to these searches.
